Literature Analysis: I love you Beth Cooper

1) The story begins at Denis Cooverman’s graduation ceremony in the school gym. It was a really hot day and Denis was nervous about the speech he had to give. When it was time for his speech Denis decided to change everything, he told Beth cooper the head cheerleader and 2nd most beautiful girl in school that he loved her in front of their whole class, friends, and family. At the dance Denis invited Beth over to his house for a party. Beth showed up with her two friends Cammy and Treece. The only people at the party were Treece, Cammy, Beth, Denis, and Denis’s best friend Rich. After they started drinking the champagne that Denis’s father left Beth got a call from her boyfriend Kevin who was in the Marines. Kevin ended up coming to Denis’s house and started to beat him up and chasing him through out the neighborhood because he hear d Denis say he was in love with Beth. The 5 teens managed to get away from Kevin but not for long. Kevin found them at a house party that’s when Kevin and Denis started to fight until Beth drove a car into the side of the house. After they got away for the second time they all got drunk and went to Treeces dad’s lake house. Kevin finds them again because of a GPS chip in the car. Kevin takes Denis to the middle of the lake in a boat. When they stop Denis knocks Kevin out by hitting him in the head with the paddle. Denis pulls Kevin to the shore, when Kevin wakes up he starts to beat Denis up until the cops show up and take everyone home.

2) Themes

Love - This book is a one sided love story. I say this because Denis Cooverman was in love with Beth Cooper. A girl he didn’t know and she had no idea who he was.

Reality- it was a reality because in Denis’s head Beth was perfect and never did wrong but through out the story she proves him wrong and he finds out that she is far from perfect.

3) The main theme of the story was action. There was a lot of fighting and law breaking. The teens probably broke at least 10 laws in one night from drunk driving to breaking into their school.

4) Five Literary Elements

1) “congratulations, you found me” (p.82) This quote is a example of verbal irony because Beth is being sarcastic when she says it

2)” Ed Munch sat high in the bleachers, between his wife and a woman who smelled like boiled potatoes” (p.1) This quote is an example of a simile because he compares her smell to a boiled potato using the word “like”.

3) “all in all, its just another brick in the wall” (p141). In this quote he means that there is nothing different about the situation its all the same.

4) “ Beth Cooper was a nice, pretty girl who always returned the pencils she borrowed” (p.117) this is an example of love from one of the themes in Denis’s head, Beth is perfect in every way possible.

5) “why me, why not Claudia Confer? She is prettier then me, and a lot nicer.” (p.128) this is an example of the reality part of the story because Beth knows that she isn’t perfect and tries to tell Denis.

  1. Very detailed and well-written, but themes are meant to be sentences not only one word! Pretty good though (:

  2. So Denis didn't really know that Beth had a boyfriend??
